Tumors of the Skullbase

CANCERS/TUMORS OF THE SKULLBASE

The skullbase is the junction between the brain and the face and neck. Most tumors here are benign but can cause many problems due to pressure on adjacent nerves and blood supply. Dr. Ducic has described minimally invasive techniques of removing these tumors either without incisions just through the mouth or by temporarily moving or removing parts of the facial skeleton.

Dr. Ducic has described many techniques focusing on safety and reconstruction in these complex cases, which go hand in hand. In cancers of this area, aggressive surgery and often radiation and chemotherapy are needed to give the best chance of cure but results are not great in advanced disease. Early detection is the most important factor here. Some, but not all of these cases are done in conjunction with neurosurgery and/or neurotology.
